A Reno man faces several misdemeanor charges after Carson City authorities found him in an empty lot siphoning gasoline from a work truck.

The 34-year-old man was arrested at 1:09 a.m. Dec. 18 in the 300 block of Hot Springs Road and faces charges of petit larceny, gross misdemeanor possessing burglary tools, possession of stolen property, tampering with a motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report an officer was traveling south on Hot Springs Road when he saw a parked vehicle inside a lot of a closed business where there are several work trucks. The officer saw the man walking between vehicles with a gas can in his hand. The officer immediately made a u-turn and drove behind the man's vehicle in which he was attempting to get in. The officer activated his red and blue overhead lights. The officer asked the man what he was doing at the business and the man replied that he "just decided to stop" there, the report states.

The officer could smell gasoline coming from the man and asked him why he had a gas can and the man answered indirectly: "well, yes, I have a gas can, it is in the back," the arrest report states.

The officer walked to one of the parked work trucks and saw a fresh gas spill on the ground below the gas tank. The officer read the man his Miranda Rights and the man said he understood them. The man said he had gotten a flat tire so he stopped to fix it then decided he needed gas. He said he only took a couple gallons and was sorry, the arrest report states. The man was arrested.

During an inventory check of his vehicle, officers found five unopened video games, two unopened game consoles, three different Nevada license plates with glued on velcro attachments, a brown box full of store receipts, and a blue backpack that had several burglary tools and a marijuana pipe, the arrest report states.

The man told the arresting officer that he smokes pot daily and last used methamphetamine three days prior. There was a bottle of urine with a temperature strip in the center console and the man told the officer he kept it around because his employer does random drug tests, the arrest report states.

The officer asked the man what the tools were for and the man said he didn't "steal" copper but if he saw it lying around, he'd take it. The man further stated he had taken a "3 foot piece" of copper pipe from behind Best Buy but couldn't specify which store. When asked about the license plates, which returned clear, the man said he didn't know where they came from, the arrest report states.

The officer asked what the receipts were for and the man replied "What, is it illegal to have receipts?" The officer told the man that excess receipts were used to fraudulently receive refunds for merchandise in stores and the man slowly nodded his head, the report states.
The officer told the man he knew the video games and consoles were stolen as well and the man again nodded his head. The officer asked the man which store specifically did he take the games from so they could be returned and the man said he didn't want to speak anymore until he had an attorney. Bail: $5,048.
