A Reno man and woman were arrested Thursday on multiple felony charges after allegedly stealing 30 boxes of Nicorette gum, liquor and two laundry bins from Walmart, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Eduard Salazar-Lopez, 29, and Mallory Soltani, 32, were each booked on suspicion of felony grand larceny and possession of stolen property among other charges and are each being held on $50,000 bail.
According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to the Walmart store in the 3200 block of Market Street. Loss prevention informed dispatch the suspects left in a tan colored Jeep and parked in an adjacent store parking lot.
Walmart security advised that at around 12:26 p.m. they watched the couple exit the store through the garden center doors pushing a cart that had two laundry bins. The alarm went off as they left the store. Loss prevention quickly reviewed the video and confirmed the couple did not pay for the items as they left, the arrest report states. The couple went to the van and the put the stolen merchandise into the Jeep, where it went to Home Depot. The couple returned to Walmart, parked and went back inside. The female had a black purse both times she entered the store.
The couple then concealed bottles of liquor in the purse and left the store and entered the parking lot. The woman was seen on camera hiding the purse under a vehicle and walking north through the parking lot. A deputy located the pair and detained them. Walmart security confirmed it was the two who had stolen items earlier, the arrest report states.
Dispatch checked the two for warrants, Soltani was on parole and probation for theft and possession of burglary tools. Salazar-Lopez had two warrants issued in Sparks for contempt of court on larceny charges, the arrest report states.
Deputies retrieved the laundry bins and gave them back to Walmart security. A black box was located in the back of Jeep. The male suspect had two sets of keys and a stack of magnets in his pockets. One belonged to the Jeep and the other to the locked box in the trunk space in the back of the vehicle.
The officer opened the locked box to complete the vehicle inventory. Inside were 30 boxes of Nicorette gum. Also located were 10 security devices that Walmart security identified as theirs, the arrest report states. Loss prevention confirmed the boxes of gum were from their inventory. Walmart totaled the value of the gum and laundry bins at $2,053.68 and $87.50 for the security devices which had been on the gum.
Soltani was also booked for felony parole and probation violation. Salazar-Lopez also faces a gross misdemeanor charge of possession of burglary tools and two misdemeanor contempt of court warrants.
In other arrests:
— A 47-year-old Silver Springs man, Martin David Schultz, was arrested Thursday, 10:38 p.m. on felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, gross misdemeanor possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription and three misdemeanor charges.
According to the arrest report, a deputy assigned with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement team was patrolling the area north of I-580 and observed a pickup failing to maintain a lane of traffic. The pickup crossed the shoulder line for about two blocks. The deputy made a traffic stop in the 1400 block of College Parkway and contacted the driver. Another deputy observed a marijuana pipe in the passenger seat.
The man was asked to step out of the vehicle while the deputy requested a K9 unit to respond. The man appeared nervous and said he was going to lose his job. He was asked if he had anything in his pockets. The man replied “I have a tooter straw in my pocket,” the arrest report states.
A tooter straw is a device commonly use to snort methamphetamine. Deputies searched the man and located a white plastic pen in the left pant pocket. Also found was a small plastic baggies with methamphetamine. The man said he had used meth earlier, according to the arrest report. The K9 provided a positive alert on the vehicle and it was searched. Deputies found a glass marijuana pipe, a baggie with marijuana, a glass pipe in a lunch box, another pipe with marijuana and a plastic baggie with five Alprazolam pills. Bail: $9,486.
— A 25-year-old Sparks man, Michael Ian Bower, was arrested Friday, 3:56 a.m. in the 1400 block of College Parkway on felony suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, gross misdemeanor potion of imitation controlled substance, obstructing and resisting and possession of drug paraphernalia, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. A 20-year-old Carson City woman with him, Kiley Nikol Bryant, was also arrested on felony suspicion of using false identification, forgery and misdemeanor violation of probation.
According to the arrest report, a deputy made consensual contact with two occupants in a vehicle after being dispatched to a report of a suspicious vehicle in a gas station parking lot in the 1400 block of College Parkway. Bower became uncooperative with officers and was not following their requests. He was detained for officer safety. During the investigation, the woman provided an officer with a false name. She began to cry, admitted she gave officers her sister’s name. The suspect had a felony warrant for her arrest on suspicion of forgery and a misdemeanor warrant for probation violation, the arrest report states.
A K9 unit was conducted an exterior sniff of the vehicle which came back with a positive alert for the presence of narcotics. Deputies searched the vehicle and found a plastic baggie with methamphetamine and a glass marijuana pipe in the center console of the vehicle and a meth pipe in the glove compartment, the report states.
During the search deputies found an open sentry safe on the floorboard where the passenger was seated. Inside the safe officers located hypodermic devices, tourniquets, a spoon, cotton balls, saline solution, numerous plastic baggies and two baggies that contained heroin. Bail for Bower, $5,161. Bail for Bryant: $18,000.
— A 32-year-old Mound House man, Todd Rudolph Paluck, was booked Thursday on a felony suspicion of possession of a stolen firearm. According to the arrest report, the suspect was arrested April 15 during a traffic stop for being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.
During a followup investigation it was determine the 9mm Beretta Cougar semi-automatic handgun matched the description a gun stolen during an April 12 residential burglary on Lotus Circle. The victim met with the reporting deputy at the sheriff’s office and positively identified the weapon as belonging to him. Bail: $25,000.
— A 49-year-old Carson City woman, Heather Laura Greenlee, was booked into jail Thursday, 7:10 p.m. on a felony warrant, alleging trafficking a controlled substance, issued out of Sparks Municipal Court as well as a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant. Bail: $31,415.
— A Carson City woman was arrested Thursday, 5:52 p.m. in the 3100 block of Highway 50 East on misdemeanor suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a fast food restaurant where an employee reported that a woman ordered food, appeared under the influence and was going to leave in a vehicle. A deputy arrived and observed the woman leaving the parking lot.
The officer saw that the woman appeared to be driving at him without noticing as he yelled for her to stop. The driver nearly hit the officer as she drove toward him, the arrest report states. The driver then turned and continued down the parking lot, ignoring requests to stop. The officer pulled behind her with his emergency lights and sirens and the driver pulled over.
The woman denied she had been drinking. The officer observed the woman to be very delayed and slow to answer questions, her eyes were watery and bloodshot. The officer could smell a slight odor of alcoholic beverage on her.
She agreed to field sobriety tests and had trouble standing on her own. The woman informed the officer she is taking several prescription medications. She also stated she had 2 shots of vodka about four hours prior. She was arrested on suspicion of DUI. At jail officers found a mint tin in the woman’s pocket which contained Fluoxetine and one Diazepam and small bits of other pills. She was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. Bail: $1,137.
