A 20-year-old Carson City man was was arrested Thursday and admitted to felony embezzlement from Walmart, his employer.
Kyle James Bettencourt is being held in Carson City Jail on $20,000 bond. According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to Walmart on Market Street and spoke with store security personnel who advised they had been monitoring Bettencourt's cash transactions while he was working the register.
Personnel related that after multiple reports of cash shortages at Bettencourt's register, the store began to investigate. Personnel advised that $750 had been embezzled from Nov. 13 to Nov. 21, according to the arrest report.
Security advised that after taking him back to the office to confront him about the suspected theft, Bettencourt admitted that he had been stealing money from Walmart, was sorry for his actions, filled out and completed a written statement admitting to the thefts, the report states.
While Bettencourt was writing his statement, he removed a $100 bill from his pants pocket and said he could not lie and handed the bill to store security, the arrest report states. Store security further advised that Bettencourt stated he was sorry and had taken the $100 bill out of the register on Thursday.
During the officer's contact with Bettencourt, he said he was very sorry and should never have taken anything from Wamart. He told Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy Bob Guimont that he messed up and apologized for being very emotional as this was the first time he had ever been in trouble, the arrest report states.
He said his dad is going to be very upset with him and that his parents taught him better, the arrest report states. He said he was embarrassed. He was arrested at 8:10 p.m. and booked into jail.
