Carson City man jailed, allegedly knocks phone out of hands of woman calling for help

A Carson City man was arrested Thursday on a domestic violence charge and a related felony charge after he allegedly prevented the victim, a family member, from calling 911.
Jeremy David Smith, 19, was placed into custody at 11:52 p.m. in the 4600 block of Oak Street.

According to the arrest report, officers responded to the 5500 block of Gentry Lane in reference to a domestic dispute. On arrival the officer spoke with Smith who stated he fled the Oak Street residence when he and his aunt were in a verbal argument.

Deputies interviewed the victim, who stated that her nephew picked up a large curtain rod during an argument and began swinging it at the point to where she feared for her safety, according to the arrest report.

The woman told deputies that she told her nephew to calm down and that's when he began to swing the curtain rod at her, moving backward to avoid being struck. She said she grabbed her cell phone and told Smith she was calling police. She said Smith then struck her hand with his hand and the cell phone flew across the room. He then fled the apartment.

He faces a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery (1st) and a felony charge of preventing a victim from phoning 911. Bail: $5,137.

In other arrests:

— A 43-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Friday, 3:12 a.m. in the 3300 block of Imperial Way. She faces a gross misdemeanor charge of misusing 911 and a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

According to the arrest report, officers were called to the apartment after a report that a woman was throwing objects over the balcony and yelling. Dispatch said the reporting party was the manager of the complex who received several calls from tenants that were woken by the woman.

Deputies arrived and spoke with the shouting woman. She told officers about Satan, being crucified and John The Baptist being beheaded, the arrest report states. The woman stated she had a lawyer and wanted to record the conversation and that she was going to call 911 so the conversation could be recorded. The officer told the woman not to call 911 because that is not the use of 911. The woman plugged her landline phone into the power outlet, picked up the phone and called 911, the arrest report states.

Dispatch informed officers they had the woman on the phone, the arrest report states. The officer told the woman to hang up the phone. The woman refused at first but then hung up the phone. She was placed into cuffs.

The woman refused to walk with deputies out of the apartment, falling to the ground saying she was having a seizure, the report states. The woman yelled and thrashed some more until a another officer was able to calm her down and escorted her to the back of a patrol car. She was taken to jail and placed in a safety cell. Bail: $2,692.

— A 43-year-old Orinda, Calif., woman was booked into Carson City Jail Thursday on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant issued out of Carson City Justice Court, failure to appear on a traffic hearing issued Nov. 14, 2013. Bail: $1,050.

— A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday on two misdemeanor failure to appear warrants issued out of Carson City Justice Court issued Dec. 5, 2013. Bail: $425.

— A 39-year-old Reno man was booked into Carson City Jail Thursday, 5 p.m. on warrant for being on probation with failure to report to the court. Bail: $3,000.

— A 52-year-old Mound House man was arrested Thursday, 1:30 p.m. in the 3200 block of Market Street on three misdemeanor charges including failure to appear, possessing less than an ounce of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. Bail: $2,287.

Those arrested and facing charges are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
