A Carson City sales consultant faces felony fraud charges after admitting to stealing her roommate's credit card and withdrawing more than $1,000 to keep her vehicle from being repossessed.

Traci Renee Souza, 28, was arrested Dec. 11, 3:05 p.m at a business in the 500 block of Mallory Way after Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies tracked down the credit card and determined the woman — who also worked in the same building as the victim — used it to illegally take the money. Souza was being held at Carson City Jail on $25,000 bail.

According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the business to speak with a victim of fraud.

The victim told authorities that on Dec. 10 she lost her credit card at a gas station in the 1400 block of South Carson Street. When she went and checked her bank account she found that she had two credit card charges she had not authorized on the missing card. One charge was for $1,049 and the other for $100. The woman provided authorities a copy of her bank statement showing the two charges, the arrest report states.

Officers asked the victim if anyone else was with with her when she lost her card. She said her roommate, Traci Souza, was with her when the card was lost. She also said the two worked in the same Mallory Way office building, the arrest report states.

Officers spoke with Souza who said she was in the shower when she heard her roommate "freaking out" about her stolen credit card. Authorities asked Souza if she took the card. She stated she had not but seemed very nervous and was elusive to the questioning by authorities, the report states.

Authorities then went to a Carson City check cashing service in the 2000 block of East William Street and met with an employee there who had paperwork showing the transaction Souza made on Dec. 10 at around 1:32 p.m. The paperwork showed that Souza had used her identification with the victim's credit card to obtain $1,049, the arrest report states.

Authorities then returned to the Mallory Way business to speak with Souza. The arresting officer asked her to tell the truth about the card as authorities now had solid evidence showing she had taken money from the victim's credit card, the arrest report states.

Souza at first denied the crime but then after being confronted with the paperwork she told authorities she had taken the credit card without permission from their home and used it at the check cashing service to obtain $1,049, the report states.

Authorities asked Souza why she took the money and the woman replied that she was going through a bad divorce and that she needed the money to keep from having her vehicle repossessed, the arrest report states.

The victim was adamant about pursuing charges against Souza, the report states. She faces felony charges of fraudulent use of a credit card and obtaining money under false pretenses.
