A Carson City man faces felony drug charges after police suspected he was dealing narcotics from his home, which is adjacent to Bordewich Bray Elementary School.
Thomas William Hinsen, 51, was arrested Thursday. He faces a felony charge of maintaining a home that is known for drug activity next to a school, possession of a prescription drug without a script, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held on $23,632 bail.
Officers with the Special Enforcement Team had been doing surveillance of drug activity in the 100 block of Mountain Street in Carson City on Aug. 28, according to an arrest report.
The team conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle leaving 104 Mountain Street and found methamphetamine on the occupants in the vehicle, according to the arrest report.
On the same day at about 8:30 p.m. officers applied for and received a search warrant from Carson City Justice Court. The warrant gave permission to search 104 Mountain Street for drugs.
During the search, approximately 10 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found. Three adults inside the home were arrested on drug charges, including the daughter of Hinsen.
Thomas Hinsen is the homeowner at 104 Mountain Street and was not present during the search warrant execution. During a search of Hinsen's locked bathroom and bedroom, officers found several bottles of prescription antibiotics with the name blacked out. A bottle of prescription codeine syrup was also found in the bathroom, according to the arrest report. A marijuana pipe was found in a night stand next to Hinsen's bed, and two soda cans that held narcotics, were found in the bedroom by a K9 drug dog. Also, in a locked loft, a marijuana bong was found.
A detective called Hinsen and advised him of the search warrant at the residence. The detective asked Hinsen to return home. Hinsen stated he was already coming from Reno and was close by and would be at the home shortly. Officers waited for nearly an hour. Hinsen did not return and calls to his cell phone went unanswered, the report stated.
An officer left a business card behind with contact information. As of Thursday morning, authorities had not been in contact with Hinsen, the report stated.
Because of the investigations, the arresting officer was not able to return to 104 Mountain Street to interview Hinsen until 4:30 on Thursday afternoon. Hinsen was in his backyard when officers arrived, and invited them into his home, the report stated.
Hinsen told authorities he had attempted to contact them on Aug. 29. He told officers he received the prescription antibiotics from a friend for a tooth infection and he did not have a prescription for antibiotics.
Hinsen stated he had not used methamphetamine for weeks and that he was trying to quit using, according to the report.
He also told authorities that he does not sell methamphetamine from his home, and stated that his daughter is to blame because she is an addict and brings people to the house, according to the report.
He was arrested and faces charges of felony maintaining a drug house near a school; possession of a prescription drug without a prescription, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
