Man with baseball bat arrested after allegedly breaking into Carson City home

A Carson City man is in jail and an accomplice is at-large after the men, allegedly wielding baseball bats, broke into the home of an elderly man and stole his grandson's motorcycle.

Frederick Joseph Atherton III, 22, was jailed early Sunday morning. He faces felony charges of robbery of a person over 65 years of age, burglary of a person over 65 years of age and home invasion. Bail is $40,000.

According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to the 1600 block of Airport Road at 1:49 Sunday morning after two men with baseball bats were seen breaking into an apartment.

When officers arrived the front door of the apartment was open and the door frame was shattered near the latch, according to the report.

An officer met with the 81-year-old victim who stated he had awoken after hearing a loud banging sound coming from outside his front door. The elderly man said he got out of bed and walked into the living room when the door broke opened, according to the report.

When the door opened, the elderly man saw two men with baseball bats enter the apartment. The elderly man stated that he walked up to the men and asked them to leave. The men, instead, pushed him into the living room.

The man told authorities that he was pushed deep into the living room area so they could get to his grandson's motorcycle, which the men pushed outside of the apartment and into the street.

The men pushed the motorcycle on to Woodside Drive and ran with it down the street. The victim said he yelled at the men to stop but they they continued pushing the bike.

As an officer was speaking with the victim, sergeant Brian Humphrey located the suspects near the intersection of of Monte Rosa Drive and Gardonia Drive. The sergeant detained Atherton III while the other man ran from the scene, according to the arrest report. The elderly man made a positive identification of Atherton III from a patrol car.

The other suspect hasn't been located.

— Those arrested are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
