A 39-year-old Las Vegas man faces a felony burglary charge after allegedly clipping security tags off several items of clothing at a Carson City department store and putting them on underneath his clothes.
Anthony Abruzzo was arrested Feb. 17, 8:28 p.m. in the 3800 block of Carson Street after security from a local department store called authorities about the man was believed to be taking shoes.
Officers learned from store security that the man was concealing ladies shoes and was preparing to leave the store. Upon arrive the arresting officer observed the man walking down the middle aisle toward the front of the store. The man was wearing tan pants and had a black sweat shirt in the top of the cart, according to the arrest report. The man was walking with his head down and when he noticed the officer, he turned toward the jewelry department, the arrest report states.
The officer asked the man to speak with him. At first Abruzzo ignored the officer and then walked toward him and began to speak, the report states. The officer asked for the man's name, and asked him what he was doing in the store and asked for some identification. The man reached for his pocket and said that he left his wallet in his truck. The officer asked the man how he was going to pay for the items in his cart if his wallet was in his truck. The man said he was going to pay with a cash card, the report states.
The officer asked him what personal property he had in the shopping cart. The man said only his sweat shirt. The officer asked the man to put the sweatshirt on. As he grabbed the rolled up sweatshirt a pair of women's shoes fell out, the report states.
The arresting officer did a pat-down search of the man where he found a pair of wire-cutting pliers. Underneath the man's tan pants he was also found to be wearing a pair of blue jeans. The officer asked the man if he was wearing any clothing that belonged to the department store. The man nodded in a fashion that indicated yes to the officer's question, the arrest report states.
The officer asked the man to lift his sweatshirt along with a plain gray outer t-shirt he was wearing and the officer observed a dark gray shirt with graphics on it, the report states.
The man was handcuffed and the officer spoke with store security who informed him they observed the man going into the fitting room with loose clothing on, and then coming out with tight fitting clothing on. It was also heard from the fitting room of cutting noises being made, which turned out to be security tags, the report states.
The officer asked the man if he had any clothing that belonged to the store. The man replied that he would give the clothing back if he could just get back to Tahoe. The officer informed the man he was being arrested for burglary and that they would go to the dressing room to recover the stolen store property, the arrest report states.
While in the dressing room the officer photographed the man undress in various stages as he took off his clothing, the report states.
It turned out the man was wearing two brand new shirts which still had the department store stickers on them, a pair of blue jeans and a pair of new women's panty hose and women's underwear. It was unknown if the panty hose and underwear belonged to the department store. The value of the items allegedly stolen was placed at $98. Bail: $20,000.
— A 29-year-old Carson City man was arrested and faces felony charges after authorities found him in possession of burglary tools, methamphetamine, and had two felony warrants for his arrest.
Nicholas Samaras III was arrested Feb. 16, 6:46 p.m. outside of a Carson City casino.
Authorities acted on a tip that the man, with two known felony warrants, was inside the casino. During the arrest a baggie of less than a gram of meth was found. A subsequent search of his backpack found the man to be in possession of bolt cutters and a flashlight and a marijuana pipe. Bail: $17,561.
— A 55-year-old Carson City man faces a felony DUI charge after being arrested Feb. 16 at 10th and Nevada Street. The felony arrest is for suspicion of third DUI.
Rex Martin was stopped by Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies at 10:24 p.m. after being seen cutting across three lanes of traffic and the east bound and northbound turn lane of 10th Street, the arrest report states.
During the traffic stop officers smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from Martin, according to the arrest report. When he was asked to submit to a series of sobriety tests he could not stand without assistance, according to the report, and was unable to provide an adequate sample for a PBT.
A check of Martin found two prior DUI convictions in 2012 and 2009. His license had been revoked from September 2012 to September 2013. He faces the third DUI charge, a felony, and misdemeanor driving with a revoked license, violation of a suspended sentence and left turn violation. Bail: $23,000.
— A 54-year-old Carson City man was arrested at Carson and John streets Feb. 15, 8:31 p.m. and faces a felony charge of being in violation of his parole and probation. Officers pulled over Thomas Granville Garretson after he allegedly crossed the center line and was speeding.
Officers smelled alcohol on the man's breath. A wants and warrants check of him found Garretson to be on probation and not to consume alcohol, according to the arrest report. The man was given a field sobriety test in which he failed the walk and turn and the one leg stand. A Breathalyzer test resulted in him blowing a .180 and .177.
In non-felony related arrests:
— A 22-year-old Dayton woman was arrested Feb. 18 after turning herself in for being in violation of a suspended sentence, failure to attend substance abuse counseling.
— A 32-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested at 12:40 a.m. Feb. 17 near Stewart and Long streets and faces charges failure to appear in Tahoe Justice Court on a traffic violation, failure to stop at a stop sign and no proof of insurance.
— A 49-year-old Turlock, Calif., man was arrested Feb. 17, 1:30 p.m. in the 3200 block of Market Street and faces a charge of domestic battery. According to the arrest report, two brothers met at the Walmart store to discuss their father's estate. The brothers got into an argument inside the store where the Turlock man admitted to pushing his brother twice, including into an exit door that knocked the door off its hinges.
— Two Carson City men, ages 29 and 31, were arrested at 4:51 a.m. Feb 17 in the 200 block of East Winnie Lane, both facing misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, battery that constitutes domestic violence, and obstructing/delaying officers. According to the arrest report, the men are roommates and were fighting outside a local bar and failed to stop when police ordered them to stop.
— A Carson City man was arrested Feb 16, 12:41 a.m. in the 300 block of North Carson and faces a disorderly conduct charge. According to the arrest report a local bar called sheriff's deputies to report of an intoxicated man who wouldn't leave.
Officers arrived and observed a man, obviously intoxicated, leaning against a lamp post. The officer asked for identification from the man, who produced it and nearly fell over on his face in an attempt to retrieve it, according to the arrest report. As people passed by the man speaking with the officer, the man yelled profanities at them and told them to keep moving, the report states.
The officer asked the man if he had enough money for a cab ride home. The man said he did. The officer called a cab for the man. When the cab arrived, the officer gave the driver instructions and as the intoxicated man began to enter the car, he spun around, looked directly at the officer and said: "I ain't going home. I'm going back in the bar."
The man was arrested. A PBT test resulted in .188 breath alcohol content.
— A 39-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Feb. 16, 7:49 p.m. in the 2000 block of Bordeaux and faces a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. According to the arrest report the woman's husband told authorities that his wife had recently gotten out of an alcohol treatment program and was at home drunk. When the husband told his wife to get help she hit him in the face, grabbed a pair of scissors and threatened to kill him and her. The husband told officers that he attempted to grab the scissors from his wife and she used her finger nails, scratching him several times. Officers observed numerous cuts and scratches on the man, the arrest report states.
The victim's sister also stated that she saw the battery, her brother being hit, and heard the threat that she would kill him, according to the arrest report.
When officers arrived the woman had left and was found later hiding in the back of an SUV in the driveway. She was arrested and taken to jail where she was described as being verbally combative with jailers, the arrest report states. Bail: $3,000.
— A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested Feb. 16, 9:55 p.m. in the 500 block of North Carson Street. He faces misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, affray and being a drunken pedestrian.
The man was told to leave a local bar after trying to pick fights with customers, according to the arrest report. When officers arrived they observed the man being moved along by his friends outside the bar. The man shouted the F word several times, heard from officers down the street, according to the arrest report.
Officers observed the man's friends taking him into a nearby casino. An officer entered the casino to look for the man. While the officer was there, police dispatch sent out an alert that there was a man with a gun inside a local bar, the report states.
The officer responded to the report of a man with a gun, in which it was determined, later and subsequently admitted to being made by the 23-year-old man who was arrested. A cell phone with the number to dispatch confirmed the call.
The man also told the arresting officer that he was going to get the officer fired and that he couldn't believe he was being arrested. The man had a PBT of .215.
— A 51-year-old Carson City man was arrested Feb. 15, 10:26 p.m. and faces a DUI charge and speeding. Officers observed the Toyota pickup traveling north on North Roop from Winnie Lane doing about 45 mph in a 35 mph zone. The man was pulled over and it was observed the man had slurred speech, according to the arrest report.
The officer asked the man if he had anything to drink and the man said "one beer." He was asked if he was on any prescription medication and the man replied he was. He was asked to take a field sobriety test in which he did not satisfactorily complete the tests. His criminal record revealed that he had two DUI convictions more than seven years ago, according to the arrest report.
— Those arrested are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
