A 55-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday on a felony charge of battery with a deadly weapon after he allegedly hit a neighbor with a metal rod, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Brett Chapman was arrested at 12:47 p.m. in the 4000 block of Sherman Lane. Bail: $30,000. According to the arrest report, officers responded to the location in reference to a battery.

Officers met with the victim who said he walked outside with a friend and saw his neighbors, a couple, arguing. He said the female had a black metal rod in her hand and assaulted his friend with it. The victim said Chapman then took the rod from the woman and hit him twice in the upper arm area, the arrest report states. Officers observed two welt marks showing as lines on the upper portion of the arm, according to the report.

Officers interviewed Chapman who said the neighbor had been causing the couple problems. He said his wife and the neighbor began yelling at each other and that the neighbor put his hands on his wife. Chapman said he used the black metal rod and tapped the man twice to defend his wife.

While officers were interviewing the subjects, the victim told officers he got a phone call from the woman who told him “if you press charges against Brett, you will be sorry.” The victim showed the officer the phone and a recent call that had come through.

The woman at first denied the phone call but the officer showed the evidence in which she came forward and stated she did not want Chapman to go to jail.

The woman remained uncooperative during the investigation and she was written a citation for obstructing a police officer, the arrest report states. Chapman was arrested and taken to jail. He will appear in court Friday on the charge.
