Nevada game wardens seek help in deer slayings

Game wardens are seeking information on two mule deer does and one fawn that were shot and left near the Cold Creek community, about six miles from the High Desert Correctional Facility sometime in the early morning of January 25. Operation Game Thief is offering a $1,000 reward to help catch the poacher.

When the game warden came on the scene, one of the mule deer was still alive, but its back legs were paralyzed by the bullet (photos attached). The game warden on scene had no choice but to euthanize the suffering animal. Subsequent investigations have failed to produce a suspect so game wardens are reaching out to the public for critical information to solve the crime.

“This is a cruel and stupid waste of wildlife,” said Rob Buonamici, chief game warden with NDOW. “This was an obvious thrill killing by one or more troubled individuals who need to be brought to justice.”

Game wardens suspect these deer were shot at night, which is a separate crime in itself. There are many different crimes in this incident, said Buonamici.

As is often the case, OGT has stepped up to offer a reward in hopes of generating tips to solve the case. Big game poaching in Nevada is a felony crime. To report wildlife crime, sportsmen and members of the public can call OGT at (800) 992-3030. To learn more about game wardens and wildlife in Nevada visit NDOW on the web at www.ndow.org.
