A 33-year-old transient was arrested Wednesday on a felony charge of driving a stolen vehicle after he had not returned it to a California car rental agency, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Jeffrey Lawson is being held in Carson City Jail on $10,000 bail. According to the arrest report, officers assigned to the Special Enforcement Team went to a local motel in the 1300 block of North Carson Street to look for a number of wanted subjects.

Officers learned Lawson had checked into a room and was driving a white Toyota Sedan. Lawson then came out of his room and then went to the office to check out. The officer asked if he could speak with him and showed him pictures of the subjects wanted by authorities. Lawson stated he didn't know them, that he was from Arizona on his way to Winnemucca to visit friends.

The man was asked to produce identification, in which he reached inside the crotch area of his pants and pulled out a white tube sock that was attached to a string in his pants. The man told officer he kept his ID in his crotch so that it wouldn't get stolen, according to the arrest report.

Officers observed the man became very nervous as he rifled through the tube sock looking for his ID, according to the arrest report. He was checked for warrants and the registration status on the Toyota, which came back through dispatch as a rental car.

Officers obtained a key for the room in which Lawson had already checked out. The room was in severe disarray, according to the arrest report. While inside the room an officer heard another officer ask Lawson if he had anything illegal in the car and if he could look inside. The man sat in the car and stated he was going to call his attorney and rolled up his window. Based on the man's behavior, officers requested dispatch look further into the database to determine if he had a felony record status.

Dispatch advised that they had gotten a return on the Toyota registration, which was listed as stolen vehicle. The stolen vehicle entry listed Lawson as the suspect. Dispatch confirmed the vehicle was stolen from Bakersfield, Calif.

Lawson was removed from the vehicle and told of the stolen car status. The man stated it was not stolen as his rental was still valid. Officers found the rental agreement on the Toyota dash which stated he had rented it on Nov. 14, 2013 for two days and was supposed to return the car on Nov. 16, 2013.

When rented the car had 22,300 miles. The Toyota showed 29,000 miles on the odometer. The Toyota also had damage to the interior map light and door handle, exposing open voids in those areas, the arrest report states. Lawson had recent drug arrests from Bakersfield in June 2013 for transporting controlled substances. He also had prior arrests for stolen vehicles and taking a vehicle without owner consent.

He was taken to jail and booked on a charge of possession of a stolen vehicle. The Toyota was released to Carson City Enterprise Rental management.

A 51-year-old man faces two felony charges after allegedly crashing a stolen truck into a State Farm insurance office in Fernley on Tuesday and then attempting to punch a Lyon County Sheriff's Office deputy.

Michael Shenkel of Fernley is being held on $25,500 bail. According to Lyon County Sheriff Sgt. Ryan Powell, deputies were called at 12:52 p.m. to the State Farm Office Building located at 79 Seventh Street for a report that a vehicle had struck the building.

Witnesses on scene advised that a pickup crashed into a fence then slammed into the building with Shenkel reportedly fleeing the scene prior to deputies arriving.

Deputies responded to the location and were speaking with witnesses when the Shenkel was seen walking back to the crash scene. Deputies tried to speak with Shenkel when he attempted to punch one of the deputies. After a brief struggle Shenkel was taken into custody, said Sgt. Powell.

As deputies investigated the incident, Shenkle was uncooperative and refused to provide any details about the incident. Deputies learned the truck was not his, rather registered to another person in the Fernley area, said Powell.

The registered owner was summoned to the scene and stated that it was their truck and Shenkle was not given permission to drive the truck. The resident went home to check on his house and found property damage to a fence where the truck was parked and discovered their home had been burglarized in addition to the truck being stolen.

Witnesses stated as Shenkle was driving westbound on Main Street when he struck a billboard on the side of the road, crashed through a fence and then into the back side of the State Farm Insurance building, said Powell.

The truck penetrated the building and caused substantial property damage to the building and neighboring fences. An exact dollar amount for the damage was not known, however it was estimated to be “tens of thousands of dollars” according to a representative from State Farm.

Shenkle was transported to the Lyon County Jail and booked on the following charges:

Possession of a Stolen Vehicle - Felony
Destruction of Property – Felony
Hit and Run – Misdemeanor
Assault on a Peace Office – Gross Misdemeanor
Resisting Arrest – Misdemeanor
Reckless Driving – Misdemeanor

Nevada wildlife wardens say six elk illegally shot and left to rot

State wildlife officials want to find out who is responsible for illegally shooting six elk and leaving their carcasses to rot in two separate incidents in Lincoln County. Game wardens with the Nevada Department of Wildlife are seeking the public’s help to solve the illegal killing of four adult and two elk calves.

One group of elk was found on the west side of Mount Grafton and another group was discovered near Patterson Pass. Although the two different incidents were discovered near one another, game wardens do not think the cases are related.

“This level of senseless wildlife crime is unacceptable,” said Tyler Turnipseed, Chief Game Warden at NDOW. “People wait years for the opportunity to hunt and harvest an elk, and it is unconscionable that some thoughtless person would shoot so many of these animals and leave them to rot.”

The incident at Patterson Pass involved two cows and one calf. The Patterson crime scene was found on October, 5. The Mount Grafton crime scene was detected a few days later. This case also had two cows and one calf poached, with almost all of the meat left to rot.

Illegally killing a big game animal is a felony in Nevada with fines ranging from $250 to $30,000 and can also include one to four years in prison and additional civil penalties. Leaving the animals to waste is a separate crime on top of the killing, punishable by up to a year in jail and $500 fine.

“There were many people hunting in this area, so we think someone may have seen something that might help us catch these criminals,” said Turnipseed. “We depend on sportsmen to help us solve these kinds of crimes because we can’t be everywhere at all times. This kind of egregious act should prompt outrage from the hunting community.”

NDOW’s wildlife and habitat conservation efforts are primarily funded by sportsmen’s license and conservation fees and a federal surcharge on hunting and fishing gear. A Carson City jail inmate who allegedly consumed hand sanitizer, was booked Saturday on suspicion of gross misdemeanor assault on a police officer and resisting after he charged at jail staff in which a taser was used to stop him, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The 33-year-old Carson City man also faces a misdemeanor charge of battery after allegedly spitting on a Carson City Fire Department member.

According to the arrest report, a deputy assigned to the jail was in the booking area when he heard screaming in the hallway. He saw the man with both arms extended and his hands clenched into fists. The man was cursing and moving closer to the deputy and another jail deputy.

The man was told to stop but did not respond to commands. A deputy removed a taser from its holders and gave commands for the man to stop and get on the ground. The man charged toward the deputies with both fists and appeared as though he was going to strike them. The taser was deployed into the abdomen of the man where he was detained and handcuffed.

The man appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance. The deputy attempted to have the man provide a preliminary breath sample and was able to get a partial sample of .066. It was later discovered the man had consumed one bag of hand sanitizer that was obtained from a secured cabinet, the arrest report states. The hand sanitizer contains ethyl alcohol at 70 percent. He was taken to Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center for treatment. Bail: $4,774.

— A 42-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 9:38 p.m. in the 3100 block of Shriver Drive on two counts violation of bail conditions, obstructing and being an ex-felon failing to register, all misdemeanors. According to the arrest report, officers were called to a home regarding a man who was trying to force his way into the residence he lived at.

The woman at the residence said her boyfriend, whom they have a 7-year-old daughter together, was told to stay away from the residence until Monday when he would then enter into a 30-day drug rehab program. He was given $140 to stay in a motel, and CPS made arrangements for the man to enter drug rehab beginning Monday, the woman told deputies.

She said the suspect went to the residence and tried to convince her to let him inside but she refused. She said the man banged on the door multiple times and had flipped the power off and on from the fuse box on the side of the house. She told dispatch she believed the man was under the influence of drugs.

When deputies arrived they called for the man to come out but he ran around the east side of the house and fled the scene. Officers spoke with the woman who advised there wasn’t a protection order in place and was unaware if CPS initiated any paperwork that would bar the man from the residence. Deputies convinced the woman to go to a friend’s home for the night as she was afraid the man would return.

Officers cleared the scene and a few minutes later the woman called 911 and reported the man was on the roof of the house. Deputies returned and saw the man jump off the roof and run. He was detained after a brief foot pursuit.

He admitted he had not registered for some time and thought he only had to register once after being let out of prison. Bail: $6,709.

A former Chicago commodities broker, missing for more than three decades and declared legally dead, was discovered working as a sports book writer in Las Vegas and arrested on false identity charges, the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles reported today.
Arthur Gerald Jones, 72, was arrested July 19 and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on four felony charges relating to identity theft and fraud. Bail was set at $20,000 following an initial appearance July 21.

Arthur Gerald Jones was arrested July 19 in Las Vegas after being reported missing for 32 years.

Jones has been living under the name of Joseph Richard Sandelli since about the time of his disappearance, the agency said in a news release. He has been working in a local sports book for the past 10 years, according to investigators from the Nevada DMV and the Social Security Administration.
Jones, who once held a seat on the Chicago Board of Trade, was reported missing from Highland Park, Illinois in 1979. The reasons for his disappearance were unclear at that time but labeled suspicious. Police and other sources believed he may have met with foul play due to gambling debts and possible organized crime affiliations.
An Illinois court declared Jones legally deceased in 1986, listing his date of death as May 11, 1979, the day he disappeared. Jones’ wife and three children collected Social Security benefits as a result.
Investigators say Jones claims he obtained a false Illinois driver license, birth certificate and Social Security card. He claims to have purchased the documents for $800 in Chicago in 1979 before going to Florida. Jones allegedly used those documents to obtain a Nevada driver license in 1988.
Jones’ arrest came about after an initial complaint regarding the fraudulent use of a Social Security number. A joint investigation by the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles’ Compliance Enforcement Division turned up the false driver license under the name of Sandelli.
The Social Security Administration is continuing its investigation.
DMV spokesman Kevin Malone said Jones has since posted bail and been released. He was working at the Rampart Casino in Summerlin.
The criminal complaint filed against Jones shows he has at least one other alias and a criminal record.
“The Social Security Administration contacted the Nevada DMV to assist them in investigating the misuse of a social security number,” Malone said. “The Nevada DMV does have a sworn law enforcement division, the Compliance Enforcement Division, so we do have officers that can go out and arrest people, and we found that he did in fact, at least allegedly, have a false identity, so we arrested him on false identity charges.”
Malone said Jones faces serious charges.
“All four of them are felony charges that carry a minimum term in prison,” he said. “Nevada has some pretty tough laws on using other people’s identities or false identities. Just possessing a false birth certificate is a felony offense in this state, so he is facing four felonies and they are pretty serious charges.”

Nevada game wardens are seeking information about a bull elk that was poached and left to rot near the Pearson Ranch late August in Lincoln County. Operation Game Thief is offering a $2,000 reward to help catch the shooter.

The landowner where the crime was committed had a trail camera near the crime scene by happenstance, capturing a fleeting glimpse of two perpetrators riding an ATV during the commission of the crime. Because of the trail camera, game wardens know the exact time of the shooting, which took place with a spotlight in the early morning hours of Aug. 29. With such clear evidence and time of the crime, game wardens hope that someone can help identify who committed the crime.

“We know there’s a witness out there who can tell us who did this,” said Chief Game Warden Tyler Turnipseed with NDOW. “We have some strong evidence and leads, but we need a little more help to piece it all together so we can catch these guys.”

In addition to shooting the animal at night, those involved left most of the meat to waste, compounding this senseless crime. Between shooting of the animal and leaving the meat to waste there is at least one felony crime and several misdemeanors.

You can hear the officers talk about the case in detail on a podcast on nevadawild.org that will be released on Friday. Follow Chief Game Warden Tyler Turnipseed on Twitter for updates on the case @Chief_GW_NV.

As is often the case, OGT has stepped up to offer a reward in hopes of generating tips to solve the case. Big game poaching in Nevada is a felony. To report wildlife crime, sportsmen and members of the public can call the OGT hotline at (800) 992-3030.
